Amazing experience

This tour was perfect for our half-day stop in Livorno. We got off our cruise ship and boarded the bus to Pisa. I loved not having the hassle of arranging transportation to Pisa myself. Our guide was wonderful. He shared so many stories about the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Even from the outside, the architecture is breathtaking. I loved seeing the Cathedral. It was much bigger than I had imagined. The whole tour was smooth and enjoyable overall. Highly recommend!

Perfect for a short visit

Coming from our cruise ship, I wanted an easy way to see Pisa. Our guide, Mateo, was great. He shared many facts about the Leaning Tower. I was most surprised that it took nearly 200 years to build! Miracle Square is beautiful, and taking photos with the tilted tower was a lot of fun. The optional tower climb was incredible; it is definitely worth it if you can manage the stairs! Definitely go for it if your cruise ship docks in Livorno!

Livorno to Pisa Tour

EXPLORE MIRACLE SQUARE

Your Livorno to Pisa tour starts with a walk through the Santa Maria Gate. This historic entrance has welcomed visitors to Miracle Square for centuries. Miracle Square is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Pisa Cathedral, and the Baptistery of St. John. Your guide will take you on a walk around the square. They will share the history, legends, and architecture of each landmark. Discover why the square has symbolized Pisa for over 800 years. You will also learn about its construction and preservation.

ADMIRE THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA

From the outside, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a feat of medieval engineering. Construction lasted from the 12th to the 14th century. The tilt occurred due to soft, uneven soil beneath the foundation. Your guide will talk about the tower, including how it survived four earthquakes. You will learn about its seven bells that still ring today. Did you know that the oldest bell in the tower, Pasquereccia, dates back to 1262? If you choose the ticket option that includes climbing the tower, you’ll be in for an exciting experience. You’ll go up the spiral staircase, feel the tilt, and enjoy the spectacular views from the top. Don’t forget to take the iconic photo supporting the tower while you’re near it.

VIEW THE CATHEDRAL AND BAPTISTERY OF ST. JOHN

After the Leaning Tower, you’ll move on to the exterior of the Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery. Take in the Romanesque architecture, detailed marble patterns, and elegant domes. Your guide will talk about the Baptistery’s unique acoustics and the Cathedral’s façade. As you continue walking around the square, you'll hear more stories about the tower. The Leaning Tower of Pisa has a rich history. It also survived through wars, nearly collapsing, which showcases its resilience. Did you know that during World War II, German soldiers reportedly used the tower as a lookout? With this, your walk around the square will come to an end. You’ll then get some free time to explore the square on your own or shop for souvenirs. After that, you’ll board the coach and enjoy a comfortable trip back to the port of Livorno.

Why doesn’t the Leaning Tower of Pisa fall?

The Leaning Tower of Pisa has stood for over 800 years despite its famous tilt. Today, the tower’s center of gravity remains within its base, which keeps it stable. The tower’s foundation rests on soft, uneven soil, which caused it to lean. But the heavy stone construction and circular design provide stability. Over time, engineers reinforced the base and removed soil to prevent further tilting. Modern monitoring tracks movement and ensures safety. Due to the dynamic interaction between the tower’s stiffness and the soft soil, it can resist earthquakes and other challenges. Careful preservation also plays a key role in its stability.

GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • Follow all safety instructions from the staff.
  • Pay attention when taking photos. Be mindful of your surroundings.
  • Modest clothing is required when entering the Cathedral or Baptistery (shoulders and knees covered).
  • Sturdy, flat shoes are recommended to stay comfortable while walking.
  • Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen in summer, or a light jacket if visiting in the cooler months.
  • Carry a small bottle of water.
  • If climbing the tower, moderate fitness is recommended. There is no elevator, and you must go up 294 steps on narrow, winding stairs.

Meeting Point

Meet your tour leader at Via Cogorano 1, on the corner of Piazza del Municipio, next to the meeting point of the shuttle buses coming from the cruise ships. They will be wearing a blue t-shirt with "Shore Emotion Crew" written on it.
