We were spending a week in Rome and thought it would be fun to see more of Italy. I had a great experience on this trip. The trip from Rome to Pisa was comfortable, and the scenery through Tuscany was stunning. The tour was well organized, with enough time to look around. The city is truly beautiful, and the tower is a story in itself. Next time we visit Italy, we’ll definitely spend more time around Tuscany. I highly recommend this tour!
A great tour! The drive to Pisa from Rome was very enjoyable, and the pick-up was on time. Our driver was excellent. I was a bit concerned about how the kids would handle a full-day trip, but they were excited from start to finish! They loved the beautiful scenery and took so many funny photos around the Leaning Tower. With only six of us on the tour, it felt very personal. We learned a lot about the history of Pisa and picked up some great souvenirs. All in all, a perfect day for the whole family!

When the sea moved away from Pisa
The city was a powerful maritime republic from the 10th to the 13th century. It competed with Venice, Genoa, and Amalfi for control of the Mediterranean trade. By the 15th century, the Arno River, which connected Pisa to the sea, began to silt up. Mud, sand, and other fine particles slowly built up, making the river shallow and difficult for ships to pass. Over time, Pisa became cut off from the sea, and its port became unusable. The process continued from the 14th through the 16th centuries, and by the 1500s, Pisa had lost its role as a major maritime power. The nearby port of Livorno, developed by the Medici family in the late 16th century, took its place as Tuscany’s main seaport. Today, the coastline lies about 10–12 kilometers (6–7 miles) from Pisa.
